There's a very good point you raised there about the 'serviceable'. Yes, Aragorn states throughout that he doesn't command anyone to follow him and I think that is crucial to understanding the man and yet follow they do but for all the right reasons. This line might well have made it seem as if Legolas and Gimli were in Aragorn's service.
