Aragorn in Art

Time for another painting, I think.

This is another one I like a lot. It's by the Hildebrandt brothers and is called 'Leaving Bree'.  I can't say I'm usually  the biggest fan of their work, the pantomine styles of their characters don't really do it for me, but there is something rather charming about this study of Aragorn and Frodo walking side by side as they set off on their journey.

I'm usually not the biggest fan of the Hildebrandt brothers, too (their way of drawing the characters just doesn't really remind me of LotR), but you are right - there is something charming about this painting (even though Aragorn reminds me very much of Robin Hood ;-)! The two of them are sweet together in this scene and you can definitely see why Aragorn was called "Strider"! :)

Ah, the Hildebrandt brothers. My mouth involuntarily forms into a grin. I wonder what Frodo is telling Aragorn. Now it remains to be asked: Which hat is uglier? I just can't tell.

Aragorn looks a bit like John Cleese...

It's a very pointy hat - and look, look, he is wearing seven league boots - no wonder they call him Strider.

Frodo is, clearly, being played by a leprechaun!

I won a book of Tolkien related art at WriterConUK - I will have to scan some of the best, and weirdest, and share them.

That's adorable. And why do I get the feeling they've switched hats?

I'm looking at the hats and trying to imagine how they intend to get through the wilderness unseen.

Can't you just picture them hiding behind a log while the Nazgul and their horses just stand there, looking directly at their hats? And the two of them later wondering how the Nazgul knew they were there?

Gosh... Strider meets Robin Hood, without a doubt. And Frodo looks a bit like he's the salt shaker on a Thanksgiving holiday table here in the U.S. Very much the pilgrim hat he has on! And the cuffs on Aragorn's boots... wow. I don't see how he can take a step without them getting tangled up together.

But I do like his hair and face and the way he's gripping his sword and paying such close attention to Frodo. I wonder what tale Frodo's telling him!

I'm not a fan of the Brother's Hildebrand either. I find their drawings too whimsical. I can't say I like their mustachioed Robin Hood like Aragorn either. In fact, I dislike him most intensily.

But yes, there is a certain charm in this drawing.

P.s. I swear I hadn't read Almut's post when I wrote this. There seems to be a consensus on the Robin Hood thingy. LOL

*hates LJ for not giving me your entries*

Wow! Those hats are amazing! I'm not much of a fan of Hildebrandt, either, but at least Aragorn has pants...
