Aragorn in Art

I think I'm missing posting 'Aspects of Aragorn' and so, with nothing else finished, I'm going to start an occasional series posting pics of Aragorn as he appears in works of art, especially those paintings which pre-date Viggo. I seem to have gathered together quite a collection so I'll share some of the most interesting ones with you.
The idea came partly from a project I'm working on but also from Cairistiona's 'Aragorn a Day' series and a recent post of Curiouswombat's which reminded me of all the Aragorns in miniskirts I've seen!
I'll begin with this offering by Rowena Morrell called 'The Last Steward of Gondor'. This one has to be worth a peek if only for those thighs!

Date: 2009-05-02 01:14 pm (UTC)I have to say, though, that this one always makes me laugh rather hysterically. To her credit, she paints very well, but gah!! Between the mini-skirts, blonde Faramir, and the bevy of women draping themselves all over (could the gal on the right look any more bored and disdainful??)... and the soldiers in leg warmers stumbling up the stairs barely paying attention to Elessar, who looks as if he's thinking, "Hand me the scepter, Faramir and make sure I don't drop it while I'm busy looking Kingly"... (Or even, "Hmm, is that a crebain up there?")
Well, it's quite a flight of fancy, I have to say. LOL

Date: 2009-05-02 04:03 pm (UTC)It reminds me somehow of 'Alexander'.
But the thighs are definitely worth a second look!

Date: 2009-05-03 01:54 am (UTC)That is the most horrible thing I have ever seen on my life. It's even worse than Bakshi's kilted Aragorn. Her snooty Aragorn makes want to... Weeeeeeeeeeeel I'd better not mention it. *grin*
Great idea, Inzilbeth.

She's actually a very talented artist and I guess the scene isn't meant to be taken too seriously. Yes those guys are a scream, aren't they?
Arwen gets a look-in too, for sure. I don't think I've come across any Isildur either.

Date: 2009-05-13 09:44 am (UTC)Want some more outrageous Tolkien art? I have some for you:
Her Silmarillion art makes elves look, well... it can only come from Ezpeleta. Ongoing joke on TORn is that you get an immediate ban from posting this art XDD
http://fan.theonering.net/rolozo/collection/ezpeleta?hide=-2
And as a bonus, a pencil drawing of Aragorn and Arwen from her (Elladan and Elrohir w/ hobbit in bg?): http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/ezpeleta/Arwen_y_Aragorn.jpg
Aragorn borrowed Arwen's cloak/mantle thing. This one is a gem. Don't want to spoil the surprise and state the obvious, though... http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/gentile/boromir.jpg
Not as amusing as the other two, but it's that bloody purple again (and if it's Boromir rather than Aragorn, then where is the latter?) http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/sweet/renewed.jpg
Gandalf's beard is awesome. Aragorn looks... uh... well, actually, he looks like an uncle of mine. My uncle is 100% Mexican XD http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/herring/wolves.jpg It's that darn mustache.
Gondor needs no stinkin pants :D
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/rivoche/fellowship.jpg
Gandalf looks great, but the other tall fellow... let's play "guess who he is".
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/sweet/inscription.jpg
Fuzzy-slippers-butterfly-wings-lion-head Balrog! ^^
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/rivoche/balrog.jpg
This image would be fine if it were not one thing. One word: Saruman
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/kordej/towers.jpg
Dear Mr Nasmith- I love your art to death, but don't make Aragorn look so ancient :( Not so much funny, but it's interesting to compare your Nasmith-Aragorn piece to his old one. Thank goodness he put dark hair on yours.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/nasmith/cheerless.jpg
Again, not nearly as funny as some of the others, but... Aragorn's cape. Dude. I think he accidently took Dracula's.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/sweet/paths.jpg
Not funny ones:
I actually like this depiction of Strider- without that ridiculous mustache, preferably: http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/hildebrandt/pony.jpg
Not funny, but... Boromir is absofreakinglutely gorgeous. I'll pretend he's Aragorn.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/chmiel/Boromir_Frodo_Amon_Hen.jpg
This is something what I imagined Ents looking like before the films because, honestly, they were hard to visualise: http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/sweet/entmoot.jpg
I prefer PJ's version now.
I just found this painting and wow, I really love it.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/sjogren/eowynnazgul.jpg
This one is alright... Arwen is gorgeous. I'm ignoring Aragorn's mustache. I also don't think Tolkien knew what he was getting himself into when he made the crown a helm with wings on it.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/hildebrandt/wedding.jpg
There are no words to describe how much I love this illustration:
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/herring/scouring.jpg
I love how angry Aragorn is in this one
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/spangenberg/aragorn.jpg
Arwen is pretty.. have yet to grow interest in the Aragorn
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/zeil/arwen.jpg
This is slightly funny. Mostly the background folk, with all of their pantless glory. Gotta love those boots of Aragorn's... whatever that pointy thing is called.
http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/edelfeldt/crowning.jpg
I think all of these will keep your days without 'AoA' busy ;) Speaking of which, still need to read the prologue; finals are done in two days, so will read then :D
I'll look around dA for any non-Viggo Aragorn's, as well. There are a few.
Back to writing my essay... at 2:30.. *whistles*

Date: 2009-05-14 09:06 pm (UTC)I think you've trawled the net even more thoroughly than I have. I must admit I've seen all the Aragorn ones before but not most of the others [totally single mindedly obsessed, who me?] and never these Silmarillion beauties. My God, I thought the Elves were meant to be fair. This bunch of green weirdos would give you nightmares. What's with all the dobermen do you think? And did Orome wear a thong and have a pack of German shepherds snapping at Nahar's heels? My favourite of these has to be the one of Haldir and his brothers waiting for the hobbits to climb up to the talan. I said hobbits but - butch, half naked midgets?
I've not seen that balrog before [where are you on the wings or no wings issue] nor the Saruman one. Yes it looks interesting but not so Saruman himself. Got to agree with you on Boromir and the Eowyn and the Nazgul one. Is that by John Howe. It looks his kind of thing. And I so agree with you on the Storming of the Bank. I've not seen that before. Thanks for digging it out.
But to get back to Aragorn. I admit I'm not a huge fan of the Hildebrant brothers but there are three Aragorn's of theirs I do like and that coronation is one [the others are the healing of Eowyn and 'Leaving Bree' which is my favourite]. Now I so have to take issue with you over Ted, tes, yes, yes! I love both the man and his art and I have hanging on my bedroom wall the one and only painting he has ever done of just Aragorn on his own, no background, just Aragorn striding and I absolutely love it. It is my favourite of all the pre Viggo Aragorns. Ted painted it 30 years ago and it was sitting in his studio until I bought it 3 years back. Its not on the internet but I'll try and take a decent pic and post it.
I so wish you could come to these art exhibitions we have here. You would really love it and the artists are all so generous with their time, you would learn a lot from them too.
Thank you so much for posting all those. I expect I'll include quite a few of these over the next few weeks as we have some fun with them.
