Tolkien Quiz

I’ve taken part in two RL Tolkien quizzes so far this year. The one in April at the Moreton in Marsh art exhibition was very formal – we sat down with question papers and had a set time to complete. The one at Sarehole was more a matter of pick up a form and submit it if you want to. As most of the questions were of the ‘what colour is Gandalf’s hat?’ variety, I didn’t bother. The Moreton one was more challenging but still with lots of very easy questions that pandered to all levels of knowledge. So I thought it would be interesting to try and write one that was more of a challenge but without being so hard and obscure that it was no fun to actually take part.
So while I’ve been going about my mundane chores [mucking out the sheds mostly – very boring] I’ve been dredging my knowledge and dreaming up what I hope are interesting questions.
If you would like to have a go, questions are under the cut and I’ll post the answers tomorrow.
1. Who were the three mariners who accompanied Eärendil on his voyage to Valinor?
2. Which Steward hunted the wild Kine of Araw?

25. What was the name of the Drûg who aided Barach?

27. Who slew Golfimbul and so invented the game of golf?
28. Whose daughter did Valacar marry?
29. How old were Aragorn and Arwen when they wed?
30. In what year did Elrond found Imladris?
31. Who slew Thrór?
33. Which king of Arthedain first permitted hobbits to settle in the Shire?
34. On which tributary of the Gelion did Beren and Lúthien make their home?
35. Who was the tallest of the Edain?
36. Who was the elf-maiden who befriended
37. Which three Elves were slain by Gothmog?
38. Which Rohan warrior rode Hasufel before Aragorn?
39. What is the Westron for ‘hobbit’?
40. The butchering of which Elf triggered the start of the Nírnaeth Arnoediad?
And if you sail through all those without so much as lifting up a text, try this question which was the killer tie-break at Moreton this year.
Name the children of Ronald and Hilary in the order in which they were born.
No one, including some of the most knowledgeable minds in the Tolkien Society, knew the answer to that one!

Date: 2009-05-31 03:28 pm (UTC)I am obviously at the 'What colour is Gandalf's hat' level.
BTW, have you, or anybody reading this, ever seen a picture that does justice to Gandalf's description where it states that " He wore a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak and a silver scarf. He had a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat. I have never been able to imagine it, especially the eyebrows!

Date: 2009-05-31 04:57 pm (UTC)I can't think of any picture off the top of my head which shows either the scarf or the bushy eyebrows but I'll look into it. You have me curious!

Date: 2009-05-31 08:17 pm (UTC)I have a RL friend who simply can not finish the Silm even though she's a fanatical LOTR fan. It's not for everyone but one of the reasons I love it is all the facts and figures and UT even more so.

Date: 2009-05-31 06:32 pm (UTC)Um, I can take a stab at 35 and say Elendil. And 29, Aragorn was (um, taking off shoes to count on toes... oh, dear, I don't have that many...) okay, 3019-2931 would be... 88!! (I hope that's right... Damn it, Jim, I'm a writer, not a mathematician!) As for Arwen, um, she was a thousand or two thousand years older. (Obviously, I know Aragorn better than Arwen!)
Other than that... I'll come back in a few years after I've read the books several more times. LOL
