I’ve taken part in two RL Tolkien quizzes so far this year. The one in April at the  Moreton in Marsh art exhibition was very formal – we sat down with question papers and had a set time to complete. The one at Sarehole was more a matter of pick up a form and submit it if you want to. As most of the questions were of the ‘what colour is Gandalf’s hat?’ variety, I didn’t bother. The Moreton one was more challenging but still with lots of very easy questions that pandered to all levels of knowledge. So I thought it would be interesting to try and write one that was more of a challenge but without being so hard and obscure that it was no fun to actually take part.

So while I’ve been going about my mundane chores [mucking out the sheds mostly – very boring]  I’ve been dredging my knowledge and dreaming up what I hope are interesting questions.

If you would like to have a go, questions are under the cut and I’ll post the answers tomorrow.

1.  Who were the three mariners who accompanied Eärendil on his voyage to Valinor?

2.  Which Steward hunted the wild Kine of Araw?

3.  Who was Silmariën’s husband?

4.  Names the two trees that Turgon made for his court in Gondolin?

5.  In birth order, name Isildur’s four sons.

6.  Identify the three characters named Eärendur.

7.  Who were the parents of Erendis?

8.  Which Chieftain of the Dúnedain succeeded Aragorn I?

9.  What were the dates of the Fell Winter and the Long Winter [Third age]?

10. Name Ondoher’s three children?

11. What was the name of the Elvenking’s butler?

12. List the four Sea Kings of Gondor in the order in which they ruled.

13. From whom did Olórin learn patience in Valinor?

14. Give three alternative names for Taniquetil?

15. Which Elves from Doriath attended the Mereth Aderthad?

16. Where did Hador die?

17. Which king of Númenor was called the Unwilling?

18. Who were the two Blue wizards?

19. Name Bilbo’s parents.

20. What was the name of Tar-Minastir’s Admiral?

21. Name Mîm’s two sons.

22. Who were the two great grandson’s of Castamir who defeated Minardil?

23. Who was the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain to be fostered at Rivendell?

24. Why did Súrion succeed Tar- Anárion as king of Númenor?

25. What was the name of the Drûg who aided Barach?

26. Which king of Númenor was omitted from the 1st edition of LOTR?

27. Who slew Golfimbul and so invented the game of golf?

28. Whose daughter did Valacar marry?

29. How old were Aragorn and Arwen when they wed?

30. In what year did Elrond found Imladris?

31. Who slew Thrór?

33. Which king of Arthedain first permitted hobbits to settle in the Shire?

34. On which tributary of the Gelion did Beren and Lúthien make their home?

35. Who was the tallest of the Edain?

36.  Who was the elf-maiden who befriended Turin in Menegroth?

37. Which three Elves were slain by Gothmog?

38. Which Rohan warrior rode Hasufel before Aragorn?

39. What is the Westron for ‘hobbit’?

40. The butchering of which Elf triggered the start of the Nírnaeth Arnoediad?

And if you sail through all those without so much as lifting up a text, try this question which was the killer tie-break at Moreton this year.

Name the children of Ronald and Hilary in the order in which they were born.

No one, including some of the most knowledgeable minds in the Tolkien Society, knew the answer to that one!

13. Nienna
19. Bungo and Belladonna
27. The Bullroarer
35. Elendil

Ack, that's pathetic! I didn't even know all the hobbit questions! (Assuming I even got *these* four correct without looking anything up.)

*hangs head in shame and needs to read the books AGAIN*

Oh well done you for even taking part as there were so few Hobbit questions! A quiz that mainly revolved around hobbit family trees would have me answering even fewer.

I tried this out on Passolargo and she warned me I needed to distinquish between Edain and Numenorean in 35.

Thank you, Shirebound, for being such a good sport!

*sigh*

Well, maybe 'Bandobras Took' will net me an additional 1/16th of a point for #27. :)

And I'll take a few completely wild guesses before I slink off to breakfast.

8. Arador
29. Aragorn was 88 and Arwen was... older.
33. Arvedui

Agh! I thought that I was quite a Tolkien geek but I obviously need to swot a LOT harder. The Silmarilion is on my Summer reading list. I am not going to show myself up by typing the answers to the three or four questions that I think I might know the answers to because I am sure that I can't spell them correctly.! But it was fun reading!

I am obviously at the 'What colour is Gandalf's hat' level.

BTW, have you, or anybody reading this, ever seen a picture that does justice to Gandalf's description where it states that " He wore a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak and a silver scarf. He had a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat. I have never been able to imagine it, especially the eyebrows!

LOL! Well you can always keep this to have a go after you've read it!

I can't think of any picture off the top of my head which shows either the scarf or the bushy eyebrows but I'll look into it. You have me curious!

Bushy eyebrows sticking out beyond his hat has always had me stumped from the first time I read the book!

I have had numerous attempts to read the Silm but have always given up. I am detirmined that it isn't going to beat me this time!!!

The bushy eyebrow thing is something I just tend to ignore when reading as I can't sustain the image in my mind. I had a look at Rolozzo Tolkien but none of the pictures there have eyebrows that big so I don't think I'm the only one!

I have a RL friend who simply can not finish the Silm even though she's a fanatical LOTR fan. It's not for everyone but one of the reasons I love it is all the facts and figures and UT even more so.

Oh good heavens. Well, can't say I wasn't warned. LOL

Um, I can take a stab at 35 and say Elendil. And 29, Aragorn was (um, taking off shoes to count on toes... oh, dear, I don't have that many...) okay, 3019-2931 would be... 88!! (I hope that's right... Damn it, Jim, I'm a writer, not a mathematician!) As for Arwen, um, she was a thousand or two thousand years older. (Obviously, I know Aragorn better than Arwen!)

Other than that... I'll come back in a few years after I've read the books several more times. LOL

I must admit though, I am beginning to feel a bit like I'm the only sad really geeky nerd round here!

Hey, well done, Roisin, and now I feel better about not being the only geek. There were rather a lot of Numenor questions weren't there, but theh Numenor is a rather fascinating place.

I've never thought about the sea-faring side that much, to be honest. I think I find them fascinating because they were this superior race of men that had everything going for them yet they still fell foul to the same weaknesses as the rest of us and ultimately that was what destroyed them.

Yes, I would expect you to know your stuff!

I loved that quiz, and spent a couple of most enjoyable hours researching my references: I hope I got them right.

7) Beregar, and Nüneth

8) Araglas

9) Fell Winter Third Age 2911 / Long Winter TA 2758-59

I'd love to try a tough Aragorn one and see if I knew my beloved King as well as I thought! I've read the SIlm,but I was interested rather than enthralled and read it mainly to learn about Aragorn's ancestors and explain mysterious parts of LOTR. I loved the idea of the Music, but there were so many Elves with names starting with F that my mind was in knots !

I'll go back to my mucking out and see if I can come up with some not too easy Aragorn questions. I doubt I'll be able to trip you up though! I had to take notes the first time I read the Silm to keep all those F's straight!
