*takes a deep breath*

*knows none of these will be spelled right*

1. Elenna, The Land of Gift, Atalantalle

3. Elros Tar-Minyatur

4. Meneltarma

6. Telperion

10. Lindon

21. *sigh* I know it was a woman.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Well done, actually you spelt almost everything right! This is a very hard quizz and I had to go through my notes to come up most of it so I'll be very surprised if anyone can do all of this off the top of their hand.
Thanks for having a go!

[identity profile] myystic.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ya know, looking at these quizzes you post.. I'm reminded of exactly *why* I have the Encyclopedia of Arda bookmarked!

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! That is indeed a very useful site.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm keeping all my fingers crossed I got them all right.

1) Númenóre, Anadûnê (adûnaic), Andor (The Land of Gift), Númendor, Westernesse, Elenna, and after the Fall Akallabêth, Mar-Nu-Falmar, Atalantë.

2) According to Appendix B The Edain reached Númenor on Second Age 32. So I imagine that’s also when they set sail.

3) Elros Tar-Minyatur

4) Meneltarma

5) Erendis, after her bethrotal to Aldarion. It means Lady of The Star-brow, and it was given her on account of the diamond Aldarion gave her, and which she set on a silver fillet and wore on her brow.

6) Celeborn, The White Tree of Tol-Eressëa

7) Calmindon, Light-tower

8) On the shores around the Bay of Eldanna

9) Tar Atanamir

10) Umbar

11) Tar-Ancalimë, Tar-Telperiën, and Tar-Vanimeldë

12) The Guild of Venturers

13) Armenelos, The Golden

14) Tar-Palantir

15) The twentieth King, Ar-Adûnakhôr

16) Nine

17) Valandil, Silmariën’s son.

18) Ar-Gilmilzôr

19) Gimilkhâd

20) Alcarondas, The Castle of the Sea

21) Tar-Míriel, Ar-Pharazôn’s wife, and only daughter of Tar-Palantir

22) Second Age 3319

23) Almarian, daughter of Vëantur

24) Vëantur, captain of the King’s ships under Tar-Elendil and Aldarion’s grandfather

25) Lond Daer

26) (Quenya) Far-wanderer, the first great ship designed by Aldarion when he was still called Anardil

27) Oioläire, Ever-summer.

28) To Aldarion they gave a sapling tree whose bark was snow-white “and its stem straight, strong and pliant as if were of steel.” It bore cool leaves in summer and flowers in winter. To Erendis a pair of gray birds with golden beaks and feet.

29) Mámandil, A.k.a. Hallacar, son of Hallatan of Hyarastorni, of the line of Elros.

30) Mittalmar

31) Aranrúth, Sindarin for “Anger of The King”. It was the sword of Elu Thingol. Elwing, his daughter, gave it to her son Elros, and so it became a heirloom of the kings of Númenor. It was lost in the Downfall

32) On the Emyn Beraid, The Tower Hills.

33) Parmaitë

34) Now there are two answers to that: In LOTR, Appendix A it is said: “The sixth King [Tar-Aldarion] left only one child, a daughter. She became the first Queen [i.e. Ruling Queen]; for it was then made a law of the royal house that the eldest child of the King, whether man or woman, should receive the scepter.” In UT, ‘The Line of Elros’, it is said: “His only child was a daughter, very beautiful, Ancalimë. In her favour Aldarion altered the law of succession, so that the (eldest) daughter of a King should succeed, if he had no sons. So, take your pick. I, of course, think the version from Appendix A has more weight. *grin*

35) Mithril

36) Ar-Zimrathon

37) Tar-Calion

38) Rómmena, was the greatest and had the greatest shipyards

39) They could not wed

40) Under the falling Hills. It is said they lie imprisoned in the caves of the Forgotten until the Last Battle and the Day of Doom.

I had a great time researching for the replies. Thanks for going through the trouble of writing this quiz, Inzilbêth

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not completely, but you did a great job! You've also answered a question that was niggling me - that there were two differing versions of the exact wording of Aldarion's law. In this instance, it made no difference but might have done subsequently.

I'm glad you enjoyed researching it all. Well done!

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I believe we should disregard the wording from 'The Line of Elros'. After all Tolkien always considered that that was written in LOTR as cannon.

I caught my mistake right now. Umbar indeed! *slaps head* Must have been wool gathering last night. *grin*

As I said it made my evening answering your quiz.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Yes, you've got it! I hardly need bother posting the answers now, in fact I might just copy and paste yours as they are more detailed than mine!

If ever there is a discrepancy between LOTR and any other of Tolkien's writings, I always go for LOTR as well [except for the year that Aragorn found Gollum and then I go with UT LOL!]

I'm so glad you enjoyed doing it and thank you for researching it so thoroughly.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, grin!

Thank you for taking the trouble to write it, and giving me the opportunity to learn so much. It was such an enjoyable quiz.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! Hopefully I'll have the Aragorn one finished soon.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Bring on the Aragorn one. Can't wait for it. *grin*

Yay! You did a fantastic job! In fact the ones you didn't know were the same ones I had to look up myself *is very impressed*!

I'll post the answers Sunday, but thanks so much for playing along.

Also, I'm one of the co-admins on OSA's quiz/challenge section. Can I send 10 of these to my co-admin to use on that site? If yes, are you on there so we can give you credit for writing it?

Re: this was HARD!

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-14 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well thank you very much, I'm very flattered that you should ask. I did write the quiz primarily for Roisin, though, and as she hasn't been able to do it yet, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass. Also I think I would like to be credited and I'm not a member at OSA.

Thanks again, though, for asking and for playing along. I'll put the answers up in a bit.

*does not know most of this and will not try and figure it out*

*wonders why in the world my message center caught this message and not your others...* The only connection between this message and the last message is that you mentioned roisin in both of them. Quick! Post with the name roisin again XD

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! I don't know why your LJ hates mine so much.

Don't blame you for not doing this one. It IS hard. However, I'm busy on an Aragorn quiz and I fully expect you to try that one!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You know for sure that I'm doing the Aragorn quiz.

I haven't read Unfinished Tales in ages though... *sigh* Only do stuff from LOTR, then I'll ace it ;P

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought you might be up for it!

I warn you though, it's going to be a tough one *evil grin*!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hit me with your best shot!

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, I'm really having to pull out all the stops to make sure everyone doesn't score 100% on this one!
