Here is the second part of my Aragorn quiz. It's hard! While writing 'Aspects of Aragorn', I researched the character thoroughly, not only reading and re reading every published word the Professor wrote about him, but also delving into literally dozens of books about Tolkien and his works so as to be absolutely certain that my interpretations of the character were compatible with the conventional ones held by Tolkien scholars. So I thought it would be fun, therefore, to include some of the lesser known facts that I unearthed about Aragorn in this quiz.

Good luck!

1. To which character did Tolkien originally give the name ‘Aragorn’?

2. Of his distant kin, which two characters is Aragorn said to most resemble?

3. To whom did Aragorn say the words: ‘Good and ill have not changed since yester-year.’

4. In his letters, Tolkien explains the problems of informing the reader of Aragorn’s adventures after he passed through the Paths of the Dead and yet also of bringing him unexpectedly to battle on the Pelennor. Provided in full, to what tale did he say this story would belong?

5. As a king in the Numenorean tradition, what additional role would Aragorn automatically have assumed on becoming monarch?

6. Which of these characters are not generally considered to have been among Tolkien’s inspirations for Aragorn?

What did Aragorn do immediately after speaking these words?

8. How many Chieftains of the Dúnedain had been fostered at Rivendell prior to Aragorn?

13. Which actors provide the voice of Aragorn in:-

  1. The 1978 Ralph Bakshi film
  2. The 1981 BBC radio adaptation

14. What was the original reason the character who later became Strider was missing from the feast at Rivendell?

15. ‘For a moment it seemed to the eyes of Legolas that a white flame flickered on the brows of Aragorn like a shining crown.’

In which chapter would you find this sentence?

16. What is the only known definition that Tolkien ever gave to explain the meaning of the name ‘Aragorn’?

19. Explain how each of the two Elendilmirs came to be in Aragorn’s possession.

20. In the early drafts of LOTR, which other member of the fellowship is given an emerald brooch and names himself ‘Elfstone’?

21. At Aragorn’s coronation, he repeated the following words first spoken by Elendil: Et Earello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn’ Ambar-metta!

What does this mean in English?

To what does ‘the breaking of the world’ refer?

Oh boy, I can see I'm going to learn a lot when I see the answers to this one! LOL But I think I can answer a couple of them. And I do know where to dig up answers to several more. Maybe there's hope for me yet. *grin*

Yes there is definitely hope for you! And I'm sure you can answer more than a couple.

I hoped the answers to some of these might prove interesting. I certainly found them to be when I first read about them.

This is the best I can do! (I'm assuming, with all these quizzes, that we can't look up anything before we answer.)

2. Elendil
3. Eomer
9. Trotter is the only one I know.
10. I love that book! Paul Kocher
17. Hmmmm. Using athelas, ability to put someone in a healing sleep, ability to wrest the palantir away from Sauron's hold on it. Also (in case any of those are wrong!) ability to "die at will" at the end of his life, he could command the Oathbreakers.
18. The Renewer. I'm not sure to what it refers, unless it's to bring back the glory and law of Numenor.
21. Something like, "I am come to Middle-earth, where I will dwell with all of my descendants."
28. Ummm.... Aragorn I?
29. That he has done so since he first met her.
30. Before the world was made round and the seas bent.

Your best, as always, is very good! Be all means look things up, but personally I find the fun of quizzes to be finding out what I don't know [and then I tend to remember in future!]

I'm glad you like that book. It's one of my favourites and not just because of the Aragorn chapter.

1. To which character did Tolkien originally give the name ‘Aragorn’?
... I don't know! :o *flails* Aragorn the first? ;P

2. Of his distant kin, which two characters is Aragorn said to most resemble?
Oh, this one I know. Isildur's eldest son... Elendur? It's Isildur's eldest! Name don't matter *whistles*

3. To whom did Aragorn say the words: ‘Good and ill have not changed since yester-year.’
HAHA! This one I know too, due to my LOTR class last fall. Eomer :D

4. In his letters, Tolkien explains the problems of informing the reader of Aragorn’s adventures after he passed through the Paths of the Dead and yet also of bringing him unexpectedly to battle on the Pelennor. Provided in full, to what tale did he say this story would belong?
... whhhaa? *doesn't understand the question* I remember Legolas and Gimli were the ones who told the hobbits, but I don't get the question's wording.

5. As a king in the Numenorean tradition, what additional role would Aragorn automatically have assumed on becoming monarch?
Being awesome?

6. Which of these characters are not generally considered to have been among Tolkien’s inspirations for Aragorn?
Uhh. Let's go with Charlemagne, Beowulf (I didn't like him...), and... Tristan. Because I can.

7. ‘Nay, it is the last move in a great jeopardy, and for one side or the other it will bring the end of the game.
Is this during the Last Debate when he then takes out Anduril and proclaims the (rather dangerous) proclamation that he won't sheath the sword again, thus leaving the reader's imagination to see all the hilarious things that would happen if that actually came to pass?

8. How many Chieftains of the Dúnedain had been fostered at Rivendell prior to Aragorn?
None of them had been fostered as in taken by a son by Elrond, but didn't like, all of them go there for a time to get training and whatnot? Wouldn't that be 14 if Arvedui's son didn't get it, and Aragorn doesn't count?

9. In the early days of his evolution, which of the following names were given to, or considered for, the character that later became Aragorn son of Arathorn?
Wikipedia listed all of them, but I don't quite remember all of them... so from the top of my heard, Trotter, Peregrin Boffin, Ingold son of Ingrim, Padathir, Aragorn son of Aramir, Rimbedir Aragorn son of Celegorn, Eldamir son of Eldakar.

10. The book ‘The Master of Middle-earth’ includes a chapter entitled ‘Aragorn’. Name the author.
WTF? This isn't about Aragorn! :o Cheat! :P

11. Who was the lord of Lamedon whom Aragorn named ‘the fearless’?
Hahah! I know this! Angbor! Thank you fanfic research (I made an OC, his son, play a role in said fan fic that has gone on strike... darn muses...)

12. Who did Aragorn make Chief Councilor of the Great Council of Gondor?
... seriously? O.o Uh. Imrahil? And when? Give me a date, I should know this :o Where is this from, precious?

13. Which actors provide the voice of Aragorn in:-
John Hurt. I don't know the other.

14. What was the original reason the character who later became Strider was missing from the feast at Rivendell?
*hasn't read Return of the Shadow yet and really should* He was making out with Arwen. Who wasn't created yet, but that's ok.

15. ‘For a moment it seemed to the eyes of Legolas that a white flame flickered on the brows of Aragorn like a shining crown.’
Passing of the Grey Company?

More in the next one!

16. What is the only known definition that Tolkien ever gave to explain the meaning of the name ‘Aragorn’?
Kingly valour :D Not kingly tree. Hahah.

17. Of Aragorn’s many talents, name three unusual abilities he possessed which were inherited traits.
Foresight (hopefully that isn't fanon), healing abilities with athelas, and the ability to let go of life when he wanted to. Also, rugged good looks ;)

18. What does Envinyatar mean and to what does it specifically refer?
The Renewer! And... well, the first mention of it happened in ROTK. Houses of Healing, IIRC. So let's go with healing abilities.

19. Explain how each of the two Elendilmirs came to be in Aragorn’s possession.
*also knows this- thanks fanfic*. One was crafted after the original was lost, and Elrond's sons gave it to him. The other was found in Isengard because Saruman sucks.

20. In the early drafts of LOTR, which other member of the fellowship is given an emerald brooch and names himself ‘Elfstone’?
... whhaa? Imposter! .. Frodo? xD

21. At Aragorn’s coronation, he repeated the following words first spoken by Elendil: Et Earello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn’ Ambar-metta!
I know this! To Middle-earth I am come. Here I will abide, and my heirs, until the ending of the world.

22. In the ‘The War of the Ring’, which injured horse does Aragorn tend?
I don't know. I don't own the book :o Let's say Shadowfax.

23. What was the original name Tolkien gave to Narsil reforged?
"Kingly Sword of Awesome Sauce".

24. Which king fashioned the crown used at Aragorn’s coronation?
Hahaha. Hahah. Uh. Was Anarion's son Meneldil? Let's go with him.

25. When Aragorn told Legolas and Gimli that he had dared to look in the Palantir, Gimli was surprised, but Aragorn replied: ‘you forget to whom you speak.’ However in the first published edition of LOTR his reply was quite different. What were his original words?
I don't remember his words, but apparently they were really scathing and mocking. And unAragornish.

26. How tall was Aragorn;
Tallest, and 6'6. Two inches taller than my dad XD

27. According to the various versions in UT and HOME, the Elessar might have been made by one of three different Elves. What were their names?
Oh goodness. Celebrimbor was one. Were the others Feanor and Forgotten Elf? xD

28. Who was Aragorn’s paternal great grandfather?
Argonui :D

29. After Eowyn is troth plighted to Faramir, she says to Aragorn: ‘Wish me joy, my liege-lord and healer!’
'I have wished thee joy ever since I met thee' or something like that.

30. ‘And long there he lay, an image of the splendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world.’
To what does ‘the breaking of the world’ refer?
Dagor Dagorath, when Morgoth comes back. Yay Christian parallels!

You make me feel like a failed fangirl. Must read HoMe... I have the first 7 books. Read the first three about 5 years ago before my brain collapsed. I was 14 XD

Must check Arathorn! *grin*

You took the words out of my mind. Such a wise Lady as Lúthien was must have loved beauty even more than most Elves do, so, it goes without saying that Beren must have been Handsomeness itself. *grin*

Well as I said Elves are aesthetically minded folk, so there's your explanating for elf women acting fan girly around the 'genetically handsome' heirs of Elros. Can't say I blame them. *grin*

1) Gandalf’s horse

2) Elendur – Isildur’s Eldest son and Elendil the Tall

3) Éomer

4) The Saga of Aragorn Arathorn’s Son (Letter 119, p. 258)

5) Priest-king – all Númenórean Kings were lineal Priest-kings (Letter 156, p. 206)

6) Tristan

7) “He drew Andúril and held it up glittering in the sun” and said “You shall not be sheathed again until the last battle be fought”. I just love this piece to bits, though it's very unlike most things Aragorn says, and totally in the heroic mode, so therefore impossible to acomplish. LOL

8) 14

9) All of them

10) Paul H. Kocher

11) Angbor

12) Faramir

13) 1 – John Hurt – The only right thing, and the only thing I loved in/about Bakshi’s Aragorn; 2) Robert Stephens

14) Still as the ranger hobbit Trotter, a.k.a. Peregrin Boffin, he was “in the kitchens, for his help was as much esteemed by the cooks as by the poets” - A Poet and an Cook! What else can you ask from a Mortal. Noooooooooooooooooothing. *grin*

15) Book 3, chap. 2 – “The Riders Of Rohan” (p. 433 in the one volume edition)

16) ‘Kingly Valour’ - “and his father gave him the name Aragorn, a name used in the House of the Chieftains. But Ivorwen at his naming stood by, and said ‘Kingly Valour’ (for so that name is interpreted): ‘that he shall have, but I see on his breast a green stone, and from that his ture name shall come and his chief renown: for he shall be a healer and a renewer’ (HOME – ch. XII The Peoples Of Middle-earth, Foreword, p. XII)

17) The gift of healing (As Ioreth says – “The hands of the king are the hands of a healer”; As Isildur’s Heir, the right to summon the Army of The Dead, and call upon them to fulfill their oath and to release them; the gift of foresight

18) The Renewer – The renewal of the Kingship of the Dúnedain to Gondor and Arnor.

19) The first Elendilmir, the white star of Elvish crystal upon a fillet of mithril descended from Silmarien to Elendil, taken by him as the token of royalty of The North Kingdom, and which had been lost when Isildur drowned in the Anduin was found by Elessar and Gimli, in Orthanc (where Elessar proposed to set up again the ‘palantir’ recovered from Saruman) during its restoration, behind a hidden door in a steel closet. The second Elendilmir, made by the Elven-smiths of Imladris for Valandil Isildur’s son, was a heirloom of his heirs and borne by the kings and chieftains of Arnor who came after Valandil including Aragorn. (It is the one Aragorn wears on the Pelennor fields, and on his coronation). The original one, according to UT, Elessar wore for the first time “…when he returned to the North and took up again the full kingship of Arnor [then] Arwen bound it upon his brow, and men were silent in amaze to see its splendor. But Elessar did not again imperil it, and wore it only on high days in the North Kingdom. Otherwise, when in kingly rainment he bore the Elendilmir which had descended to him. ‘And this also is a thing of reverence’, he said, ‘and above my worth; forty heads have worn it before.’” – I just love this!!!!!!!!! Am I obsessive or what?!!!!

20) Gimli

21) Out of the Great Sea To Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide and my heirs unto the ending of the world.

22) Snowmane

23) Branding

24) Atanatar II Ilcarin (The Glorious)

25) ‘What do you fear that I should say: that I had a rascal of a rebel dwarf here that I would gladly exchange for a serviceable orc?’ I love this. Who says Aragorn can’t be cranky and loose his temper, heh! LOL

26) a) at least 6 feet 6 inches tall; b) He was the tallest of the company.

27) Fëanor, Enerdhil, Celebrimbor

28) Argonui

29) ‘I have wished thee joy ever since first I saw thee. It heals my heart to see the now in bliss’

30) The Downfall of Númenor and the reshaping of The World.

And guess what? I found 7 typos and have deleted this thingy at least 4 times already. Can anyone tell moron here how I can edit these posts pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase?

I think I'm definitely a snail when it comes to quizzes. ;-) I've just made it through the first one - I could answer half of the questions and learned a lot while trying to look up the rest of them. *g* I think in this case I'll just wait for the answers! You and Estelcontar seem to be bottomless wells of knowledge where Aragorn and Tolkien are concerned. *bows*

You did very well to answer even half of the first one. I deliberately didn't include easy questions as there seemed no point. I must admit, Estelcontar and I are as bad as each other when it comes to Tolkien and to Aragorn in particular! Thanks so much for playing along.
