Latest Tolkien art from Jef Murray

I thought I'd share these two paintings which arrived in my Inbox this morning. I'm not quite sure about Meduseld as it looks rather precarious and in danger of sliding off the hilside but the one of Andúnië in its later  years is suitably brooding and troubled, I think.

I haven't yet got the knack of posting photos since upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 about a week ago. I don't seem to be able to copy and paste them into the text any more, hence the double cut!

Goodness, how would horses (or people) get up that sheer cliff? They must have an underground elevator.

Andúnië in its later years... *sniff*

Lol! It's not high on realism, is it. I know these horses of Rohan were exceptional beasts but this is asking a bit much!

Yes, poor Numenor, so sad.

Oh, those are very mysterious and evocative, aren't they? Umm, not exactly how I picture Meduseld, but there you go... we all have different takes on things. Andúnië... gosh, it's beautiful and tragic. You feel the waves are already working at it.

I'm rather bemused by the Meduseld one actually as, to me, with it's archways and columns, the building is very like the movie one yet Jef has been quite vocal in speaking against the reproduction of movie based images. Odd. I do like the sky in it though.

Yes, beautiful and tragic covers it well for Andunie.

You know, the more I look at it, the more I think it actually looks a lot like a church. The city I grew up in had a lot of church buildings that looked very much like that, and the more I look at it, the more I think, "Oh, that's the 1st Presbyterian Church on Grand Avenue, plucked up and plunked down on a mountain somewhere." LOL

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! You're right, it does look like a church. I wonder if Jef ever visited the place where you grew up!

One wonders! Of course, there's not really a 1st Presbyterian on Grand... well, there might be... but I just pulled that name out of a hat. But a lot of the churches up there really do look like that.

Gorgeous!

And I agree with you about Meduseld. I can imagine that as the back of the building, but even then the back porch would have more support.

These look really great, though. I like them.

I like them too as I can see how much care has gone into them but the balancing building would irk me if it was on my wall!

Oh these are both gorgeous!!! I like the one of Andunie especially...thank you so much for sharing these! =)

I've so glad you like them and you've encouraged me to keep posting this stuff. I get a circular email about once a month with the new art in it. I hoped others would enjoy seeing it.

Hmm - Meduseld looks like the HQ for a lodge of mountaineering Masons...

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! The mountaineering part sounds right to me! How DID they get all the way up there!

Both pics are gorgeous, though I have to agree with you that Meduseld looks rather precarious up there. *g*

Posting photos is always a pain for me, but then I've probably found the most complicated way of doing it. ;P At least it works most of the time.

I'm so glad you liked them. I love seeing new Middle-earth art and especially unusual scenes like the Andunie one.

It took me a long time to get the hang of posting photos but I see I'm going to have to learn a new technique now *sigh*!

I always love seeing new Middle-earth art, too!

Don't you just love it when that happens? ;P

One day, you really must come to these exhibitions. I know you would love it.

*Sigh* Yes!

[identity profile] silivren-tinu.livejournal.com 2009-10-31 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I would! :)

Good luck!

Beautiful colours.

He really isn't afraid of colour at all, is he.

[Love your icon btw!]

No, he most definitely isn't.

Thanks, I love it too. *g*
