Gosh, so much has happened since I last posted. Most importantly, for anyone within striking distance who is interested, the launch party for the book will be Saturday 11th August in the Redesdale Hall, Moreton in Marsh 10am to 5pm and no doubt in the pub afterwards. There will be stands and displays and refreshments and hopefully lots of people!

Ted Nasmith has very kindly given permission for the use of Thus Came Aragorn on the cover. Even though I commissioned this piece, Ted still holds the copyright so I'm very grateful to him for that.

Ruth Lacon has written a wonderful preface and all her positive feedback has helped me to sleep at night and not worry myself into a nervous wreck over the whole thing. I've managed to take the coming week off work to get the final text together. There's still the index etc  to do but the final final deadline isn't until 30th June.

For a book estimated to be nearly 400 pages long it is very modestly priced at  £9.99 and will be available on Amazon from 11th August.

Please feel free to spread the word around any writers groups etc. I had to quickly cobble together a few words for an advert for Amon Hen the other day  if anyone wants a summary to post.

Title: Hobbit to Hero: the Making of Tolkien's King
Author: Elizabeth M Stephen
ISBN 978-0-9551900-8-7  ISBN 0-9551900-7-X

'A uniquely detailed study of the character 'Aragorn' unravelling his evolution from hobbit ranger to Numenorean king and exploring how this unexpected transformation enabled Tolkien to fulfill some of the most profound functions of his wider mythology'.

This is the the first mock up of the cover.

It's just all very exciting, isn't it!! You've earned every bit of Ruth's glowing preface. (I've been telling you all along how terrific it is, but you're a bit like my daughter... hearing it from "mom" doesn't count! *g*)

That is a very good price--many times small-run books like this are twice the price or more. I've bought aviation books for hubby that run upwards of $50-$75, so your price is very reasonable indeed. Any idea when it will go up on Amazon for pre-order?

(It's so funny that you and I are both working on a June 30 deadline! Yours is far more work than mine, though!)

No, I do need to hear that from several people at least!

It's very cheap really but I guess my publisher [who is after all paying for all this] knows what he's doing. I've paid anything up to £100 for academic books so this is a steal.

I don't know about pre order though I expect it will be available. Not that you need to buy. After all your help there'll be one winging it's way to you asap!

I can't wait to hold it in my hot little hands!

And isn't it astounding how expensive those esoteric academic books can be??

'I can't wait to hold it in my hot little hands!'

Nor can I!

Yes, I guess it's all about supply and demand.

And cost distribution as well. Fewer books printed means fewer books sold to offset the publishing costs, including the author's cut. I think that e-publishing will be a real boon to authors of "niche" books that only appeal to a narrow segment of the reading market. I've already seen it at work in the indie author segment of fantasy, where new authors self-publish for Kindle or Nook, then on the strength of those sales, get picked up by a "paper and ink" publisher. The whole publishing paradigm is really changing, thanks to technology.

I think I'm very lucky to have got a proper publishing deal where I don't have to pay anything. Whether there'll be any profit is another matter but I didn't write it with that thought in mind [nice though it would be!]

Oh. My. GOD do not get me started on that :P. There are soooooo many academic books I just want to buy for myself for funsies and I simply can never justify the expense. And people wonder why academia seems so elitist it's because people CAN'T AFFORD THE BOOKS and... *histrionic sigh*.

Anyway, I am pleased as punch that this one will be so very affordable! But I would have bought it no matter what :)

Brilliant - the date is in my diary. Just off to the airport to meet Tree but there is no record of her flight and BMI said it landed at Noon so this should be fun!

And I wouldn't miss the 11th!

Oh you're my kind of ranger! I'm staying at the Bell [where we had a drink when you were there last and they have Doombar!] and they still had rooms just recently. They have got expensive though. Alternatively there's the Redesdale Arms which does better breakfasts!

Oh that would be wonderful. The good thing about Moreton is that the railway station is only a minute from the centre of town and the Hall. The Bell [aka The Prancing Pony where I'll probably spend Saturday night] is just a few yards away too and very reasonable. They now have a great display of Ted's art up in the bar and are very used to accomodating hobbits!

Yay! Do you know yet if it will be available on kindle? So many of my favourites aren't - and I don't like to carry really, really, good books with me as I go from clinic to clinic and so on as they get tatty... so I like having them on my kindle as well!
