I'm going to give my computer a good kicking!

All day I've been looking forward to watching 'Born of Hope'. The frustration of having to wait until I got home has been almost unbearable. But finally got to sit myself down in front of the computer, only to find that it won't stream. Six times I've tried to watch it and I've got no further than 3 minutes 18 seconds into it. In fact it has cut out at exactly the same place on three occasions. I'm so furious with my stupid computer feel like taking a sledge hammer to the darn think [something I did once do to a mobile phone which let me down once too often. It was enormously satisfying and the phone never pissed me off again, I can tell you!] Quite what is wrong with it I don't know but I'm going to have to abandon my attempts to watch the movie until this is sorted out as I don't want to watch it in little snatches. It sounds too good for that.
*big sigh* I'll just have to be patient a bit longer and perhaps I even ought to made it up with the computer. I have called it rather a lot of names tonight!

Arrrghhh!!!!! That is so immensely frustrating! I'm not sure how that website streams. I know with youtube, I can let it fully load and then it plays without a problem, but I don't know if this movie is buffered like that. I had a bit of a problem at times with it--at one point the sound arrived a little later than the picture so things were a little out of sync. And then the last 15 minutes or so the sound was fine but the picture was just a teeny bit herky-jerky.

The internet, for all its wonders, isn't really quite the best carrier of films quite yet.

I was rather afraid this would happen though I had hoped I would get there eventually. I'll just have to keep trying. It's a shame we can't download it properly really.

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess they don't want to issue it as a download because of piracy issues. I can see someone trying to sell DVDs of it. But it would make it easier, if it were available as a download.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're right but it does seem a shame that then they've put so much effort into it, the actually watching is so difficult.

[identity profile] lissas-elves.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard that there's more than one site on which to view it, and some works better than others. Someone mentioned that the link on the BoH site worked fine for them.

Which one have you been trying to connect to?

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried BoH and Daily motion. Both were just as bad, I've sure it's my computer, darn it!

[identity profile] suzll.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaw no! That stinks!! =( I feel your pain, stuff like that has happened to me on numerous occasions.

I haven't watched it yet either, I'm so antsy for it! Weekend and free time needs to get here ASAP =P.

Oh that must have been so satisfying to actually take a hammer to that phone! I wish I could do that to my family's desktop...

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so frustrating, isn't it! That phone was a nightmare and I had just failed to connect to a very important call so I felt totally vindicated in taking my frustration out on it. I highly recommend it!

[identity profile] silivren-tinu.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's so mean! There's nothing more frustrating than being betrayed by one's own computer! Perhaps threatening it with a sledgehammer would be a good idea. ;-) I hope the problem will be solved soon, whatever it is. *keeps all fingers crossed for you* I didn't have the time to watch "Born of Hope" yet, but at least it seems my computer is behaving.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you and I'm glad to know your computer is behaving after all the trouble you've had with it. They truly are the most frustrating things!

[identity profile] silivren-tinu.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
And they always manage to come up with new ways of annoying us! :P

[identity profile] peredhellover.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, my goodness, I really feel your pain! I think I would have been just about losing what’s left of my mind if that had happened to me. Computers and I do not have the best of relationships at the best of times, but I think I’ll have to give mine a big kiss for performing so admirably in this case. :D

As lissa asked, where are you trying to view it from? I went straight to the Born of Hope site and it worked very smoothly for me.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Being completely useless with computers myself I feel so helpless in this situation and I am soooooooo disappointed not to have seen it yet!

I have tried the BoH site already but will give it another go in a bit.

[identity profile] nierielraina.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I had this problem too. I skipped ahead about 30 seconds and had no further problems with it. I think it may be because so many people are accessing it. Keep trying. It's more than worth it!

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I noticed something like 30,000 people had watched it already so you may well have a point there. All I can do is keep trying [so long as I can refrain from seriously damaging my computer in the mean time!]

Sorry to hear that! I know how much you want to see it. Now I wonder if my old laptop will even be able to download it.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yes I'm very disappointed. I wish I could be sure what the problem is but really don't know enough about all this sort of thing. And now I've run out of time to get to your last chapter tonight. Not a good evening!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
How old is your laptop? What Windows version is it (2000, XP, Vista)? Do you know any of its specs (how much RAM, gig, etc)? (I'm not sure how much of a computer person you are). If it's an XP, at the least, I could give you some tips on how to make it run faster- have you ever defragged it, for instance?

[personal profile] shirebound 2009-12-03 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Windows XP, but I don't know about RAM. I'll see if I can download the film this weekend. Thanks for being there if I need help!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, an XP shouldn't be too bad at all. I'll write an entry sometime soon on how I made the computers in my house run like new.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm leaving even trying until later in the week, or the weekend.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
You are probably very wise!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Does your computer often have problems? Does it usually load things rather slowly or take a long time with YouTube? How old is it?

If it's not too old, but runs a little slower than right, and assuming you have a PC, I ran these two programs on three computers in my house, and all three are running beautifully- especially my brother's computer. It went from loading an internet page in 5 seconds to loading it in less than 1 sec.

Even if it isn't running too slowly, I recommend them anyways- I am *loving* life right now, my computer is working beautifully.

These are approved and awarded by the most reliable companies on the net, as well as the most reliable geeks on the net, and I have had absolutely no problems for over a week on all three computers:

CCleaner- http://www.ccleaner.com/
Defraggler- http://www.defraggler.com/

Download both of these (which is simple, dont even have to restart the computer) and start with CCleaner. Run both Cleaner and Registry, which you should see on the side clearly. It should analyze and clean both rather quickly, and with the registry you can back it up just in case there is an error (and even manually select the ones you want to delete, though I had no problems deleting all at once).

The defraggler is like Windows Defrag, only a million times better. XD Just press analyze and when that finishes start it up and let it run in the background. I don't know how knowledgeable you are at computers, but if you have never defragged before, it will take a few hours. It'll slow things down a little but defragging opens up space and really helps the computer run- basically it files stuff in an orderly fashion XD

Uhm, even if none of that helps with watching the film, it will make your computer run super awesome if it has the same results as all the computers in my house xD

Also, another thought- how many background processes do you have running? That may be a problem as well, if it's not your internet connection.

Suvi, you're an absolute star for providing all this, thank you so much. I honestly don't know how much of the problem is my router, the computer or the online bit. The router can be tempermental but the lights did stay on last night and that usually indicates it's working. I'm going to try all this when i get in tonight before I give it another go. Hopefully even a computer moron like me should be able to manage this!

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem :D I just discovered it myself and I want to spread the love :D Tell me how it works out :)

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I most certainly will and thanks again. Sadly I've no time at all to tinker tonight. I just keep telling myself, I will get to see BoH sometime, I will!

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sooooooooooooooooooo sorry your computer is acting up. I know how frustrating this can be. With my old computer, I smometimes felt like throwing it out of the window.

I do hope you manage to watch Born Of Hope today. It's soooooooooooooooooooo worth seeing.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I know and it is soooooooooooooooooo frustrating that I still haven't got to it.

[identity profile] estelcontar1.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
*Fingers crossed you get to see it during the weekend.*

[identity profile] rakshathedemon.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have Ye Ancient Dial-Up Server; so I can't watch online videos and YouTube thingies, etc. Very frustrating! One of these days, I'll get something faster, I hope; and then watch Born of Hope and all sorts of fun things.

[identity profile] inzilbeth-liz.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That must be so frustrating but, to be honest, I don't watch much of that sort of thing either. Probably the next thing I'll be absolutely bursting to see will be a trailer to The Hobbit movie!
