I've just seen this at Theonering.net. http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=24610
So the whole of 'The Hobbit' is going to span the two proposed movies. My first reaction to this news was regret that there would be no reprisal of Viggo as Aragorn [at least, in this context, I hope there won't be]. But, although that is disappointing in itself, I really don't think stretching a book that is half the size of FOTR over two movies is the greatest of ideas. Only time will tell, I guess.

LOL... we posted the same thing at the same time, nearly.

I'm very disappointed, naturally. I like the Hobbit well enough, but my heart lies with the Dunedain. I was really hoping for a true "bridge" movie. But then again... with the changes they made to the canon, maybe it's best to leave well enough (or poor enough, depending on your point of view about the LOTR movies) alone.

I will miss seeing Viggo as Aragorn, though. *sigh*

LOL! Yes, you had the same reaction as me!

I tend to agree it's better to have no movie at all than a bad one but it's still disappointing all the same.

Great minds and all that. *grin* Must be why we're such good friends!

Well, no matter what else goes on from here, at least we had Viggo for the LOTR! :)

Only time will tell! And at least it's getting made at all. I wish they'd start casting soon.

Yes, I mustn't forget that I'm still really excited about 'The Hobbit' and seeing Smaug and all the great things we have to look forward to [I was just hoping for a bit of Thorongil in Lothlorien!]

That would've been great. We'll just have to "fill in the gaps" with fic for this movie as we've been doing with the last three. :)

Yes we will and it will still be something special to look forward to.

I agree, Roisin, I wouldn't want Aragorn popping up in some completely AU situation either. I do hope this will be a faithful adaptation. I'm completely unfamiliar with Del Torro's stuff but I do remember he once said he needed several goes at reading LOTR. That I did find rather worrying.

I'm sure there will be outraged fans the world over if Sir Ian isn't Gandalf again! I love 'The Hobbit' on all sorts of levels. One of my favourite characters is Bard who is so obviously a forerunner of Aragorn. I have a feeling he might be turned into the hunk of the movie.

Yes, I can see that no movie could well be preferable to the wrong treatment. Seems like the Sil is safe for a time yet.

I'll try and catch Pan's Labyrinth next time it's on TV though, and this may sound odd from a Tolkien fan, I don't really like fantasy. [Tolkien's world was real after all LOL!]

This such disapointing news. Thank Goodness we can write our stories to fill in those years, but I was so hoping for more Aragorn in the new film and maybe more Aragorn fans for our stories.

Yes it would have been nice to have a few new scenes to enjoy. As you say, we'll just have to write our own.

Well, the White Council and the battle of Dol Guldur are not really at all in the Hobbit; if the second film focused on that after Smaug's defeat, it would be a good tie-in with Sauron/Necromancer.

... and they could always push the fight 30 years later? *wants Viggo* Ah well. We'll see what happens.

It seems to me they are looking for ways to break up a story that is almost completely from Bilbo's POV and bring in more LOTR actors. I'm very interested to see what they come up with.

I couldn't agree with you more, Inzilbeth. I so wanted to see Aragorn of the appendices, but apart from that I can't see how they'll manage to make two movies with the material in The Hobbit.

I'm very, very disappointed.

Yes, that's a big worry. You just have to wonder what is going to be invented to fill the time.

I'm praying I'm wrong again as I was about LOTR, but I swear I can't see The Hobbit being transformed into two films. After all, they made three of LOTR which is a 1138 pages long book (50th Anniversary ed.). I just can't see how they can make the 300 pages (give it or take it) Hobbit stretch into two films.

In my opinion, it doesn't look good.
